O/O Long Boil Barley Wine by Lundgren+Lindqvist, Sweden

Opinion by Richard Baird.

Packaging and art direction by Swedish design studio Lundgren+Lindqvist for O/O Brewing's Long Boil Barley Wine, a limited edition craft beer range

O/O Brewing is a craft brewery set up in 2011 by Olle Andersson & Olof Andersson. They presently operate out of the facilities of Stigbergets Bryggeri in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, but are due to open their own brewery in the Autumn of 2017, with the intention of increasing volume and gaining further control over quality.

O/O worked with Scandinavian graphic design studio Lundgren+Lindqvist, who have created labels for a variety of other O/O beers, to develop labelling for a new series of limited editions that will be sold once a year. The first of these will be Long Boil Barley Wine. Despite the name, Long Boil Barley Wine is a beer and, unlike O/O Brewing’s other products, will be aged, allowing it to develop a new complexity in a similar way to wine.

Rather than collaborating with artists and designers, an approach that characterised much of the labelling of O/O’s previous ranges, and with a desire to express something of the higher price point and ageing of the beer by making a connection with Champagne and wine, Lundgren+Lindqvist developed a typographical system of condensed characters for impact, provides room for date, sets these within a grid, and compliments this with playful but communicative art direction of product photography.

Brewdog’s Lone Wolf by B&B Studio, United Kingdom

Opinion by Richard Baird.

Logo and packaging design by London-based B&B Studio for Brewdog's craft spirits range Lone Wolf

Lone Wolf—a whisky, gin and vodka range—marks Brewdog’s entry into the craft spirits market. These are produced by Brewdog’s craft distillery in Scotland, and is said to be the only one to make base spirit from grain under one roof, modified to accommodate a 19m high 60-plate rectification column to get the purest spirit possible.

The range shares a packaging and brand identity design, created by London-based packaging specialists B&B Studio, which is described as being in defiance of category codes and conventions. These feature a stripped back label design and wolf’s head motif as an expression of product purity and the brand’s outsider stance. The spirits will be available at Brewdog bars, and as part of Brewdog’s equity scheme.

Branding and packaging design for authentic, French premium cidre Galipette Cidre by Werklig, Finland

Galipette is a premium cidre made from 100% pure fermented apple juice (pur jus) pressed from apples that are hand picked from orchards in Brittany, Northwest France. Galipette is available as a Brut and a sweeter Biologique. These are free of gluten and added sugar and created for the international markets of Europe, North America and China by the Cider Supply Company, a businesses founded on the values of local craftsmanship and European cidre making heritage.

With the intention of engaging a market made up of urban, quality seeking people who appreciate freshness and the legacy of French Cidre, Scandinavian studio Werklig created a brand identity, packaging design and website that, rather than leveraging the rural aesthetic that proliferates the category, finds a comfortable balance between heritage cues and modernity, the familiar and the distinctive.
