Brand identity and cards for Toronto based custom event soundtrack business The Playlist Co. by graphic design studio Blok

The Playlist Co. is a Canadian business providing music management and consulting services, AV construction, live music and playlists for a wide range of spaces and events, nationally and internationally. They are renowned for their encyclopaedic knowledge of music, and have collaborated with a some of Canada’s top hospitality brands, as well as local bars such as Buca, Canoe and Bar Raval.

The Playlist Co. worked with Toronto based graphic design studio Blok to develop a new brand identity that would work across a variety of touch points. These included business cards, posters, stickers and a soon to launch website, linked by a concept described by Blok as having a musicality that mimics the company’s highly curated playlists.

This concept manifests itself subtly in the typesetting of the wordmark and in the blocks of colour, inspired by jazz and soul album covers of the past. These blocks are given subtle shifts in tonality and hue as a way to express the power of music, and its ability to transform space and influence emotion.

The Hope Singers by Bedow, Sweden

Limited edition illustrated record sleeve for The Hope Singers by Bedow

Scandinavian graphic design studio Bedow have recently completed work on the record sleeves for The Hope Singers debut album It’s Time For…, which will be released on the Sing a Song Fighter label as a limited edition LP. Bedow mix a well-illustrated approach with loose hand drawn typography, and applied these using a four colour screen print process across uncoated and unbleached board. The result is cheerful, individual and distinctly crafted.

Branding for Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra by Bond, Finland

Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra is a 102 strong ensemble, currently led by chief conductor John Storgårds, with its primary venue being the Helsinki Music Centre. It has a significant history, beginning as the Helsinki Orchestral Society in 1882 and acquiring its current name following a merger with the Helsinki Symphony Orchestra in 1914. In 2016 the orchestra will have its first female chief conductor following the appointment of Susanna Mälkki.

With a desire to strengthen its image and consolidate its overall brand experience, the orchestra worked with Finnish graphic design studio Bond, who in turn collaborated with photographer Marko Rantanen, to create a new visual identity that would communicate the energy and power of its 102 musicians, and that would extended across programmes, stationery, business cards, campaigns and signage.
