Endgame: Duchamp, Chess, and the Avant-Garde by Hey

Visual identity and print by Hey for the exhibition Endgame: Duchamp, Chess, and the Avant-Garde at Fundació Joan Miró

Endgame: Duchamp, Chess, and the Avant-Garde was a temporary exhibition that took place at Barcelona’s Fundació Joan Miró between October 2016 and January 2017. It was curated by Manuel Segade, explored the history of modern art through the lens of its relationship to chess, and featured a variety of works by 20th century artist. These included Marcel Duchamp’s La Partie d’échecs, Max Ernst’s Chess Set, and Mercè Rodoreda’s Untitled (Composition IX), amongst many others. Fundació Joan Miró commissioned Spanish graphic design studio Hey to develop a visual identity for the exhibition. This linked a variety of printed materials, from large format posters, banners and indoor signage to opening night invitations and a programme set in four languages.

Corps Reviver & L’Heure du Cocktail by Spin, UK

Visual identity for publisher Corps Reviver by Spin, United Kingdom

Corps Reviver is a French publisher and revivalist, redesigning and reprinting classic literary works, the first of which is L’Heure du Cocktail, The Cocktail Hour, written by journalists Marcel Requien and Lucien Farnoux-Reynaud and originally published in 1927. L’Heure du Cocktail, at the time, revolutionised the cocktail book, approaching the subject in a new way. This 2017 bilingual edition, presented in French and English, designed by Spin and illustrated by Spin’s Tony Brook, also offers a new take, pairing expressionist image with a more formal and modernist approach to layout and type. The release of L’Heure du Cocktail coincides with the launch of Corps Reviver’s own identity, also designed by Spin. This similarly explores something of the modernist, in the choice of type and use of form and pattern which appears to be rooted in the military associations of name.

O/O Long Boil Barley Wine by Lundgren+Lindqvist, Sweden

Packaging and art direction by Swedish design studio Lundgren+Lindqvist for O/O Brewing's Long Boil Barley Wine, a limited edition craft beer range

O/O Brewing is a craft brewery set up in 2011 by Olle Andersson & Olof Andersson. They presently operate out of the facilities of Stigbergets Bryggeri in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, but are due to open their own brewery in the Autumn of 2017, with the intention of increasing volume and gaining further control over quality.

O/O worked with Scandinavian graphic design studio Lundgren+Lindqvist, who have created labels for a variety of other O/O beers, to develop labelling for a new series of limited editions that will be sold once a year. The first of these will be Long Boil Barley Wine. Despite the name, Long Boil Barley Wine is a beer and, unlike O/O Brewing’s other products, will be aged, allowing it to develop a new complexity in a similar way to wine.

Rather than collaborating with artists and designers, an approach that characterised much of the labelling of O/O’s previous ranges, and with a desire to express something of the higher price point and ageing of the beer by making a connection with Champagne and wine, Lundgren+Lindqvist developed a typographical system of condensed characters for impact, provides room for date, sets these within a grid, and compliments this with playful but communicative art direction of product photography.
