Vitra is a Swiss furniture manufacturer that holds the European license to many of Herman Miller’s ranges. It has a large and diverse catalogue of contemporary home and office furnishings, furniture for public spaces and timeless classics by notable designers such as Charles & Ray Eames, George Nelson and Verner Panton.

After years of admir­ing Vitra’s range of fur­ni­ture, Scandinavian graphic design studio BVD recently had the oppor­tu­nity to develop a new pack­ag­ing system for the company.

Tina Frey Designs by Mucho, United States

Tina Frey is an American homeware designer with a studio in San Francisco. She is inspired by the fluid lines of the sea, the curves and contours of nature, objects picked up while traveling, and the translucent colour of ice lollies and jelly beans. The design of each of her products—which include plates, bowls and utensils—is rooted in simplicity and functionality. These are sculpted by hand in clay, cast in colour in small batches, then sanded and finished by hand. This process gives each object a high-quality and uniquely crafted character.

Drawing on the organic shapes and hand crafted nature of the range, graphic design studio Mucho created a new visual identity for Tina Frey with a soft and sculpted quality—in form, colour and texture—and a contemporary restraint, while the use of brighter colour introduces contrast, a conviviality and communicative breadth. This links brochure, note cards, business cards and posters.

Norwegian Presence by Bielke&Yang, Norway

Catalogue for Norwegian Presence by graphic design studio Bielke&Yang

Norwegian Presence was an exhibition of handcraft and design, past and present, from Norway. It was held at Fuorisalone, which makes up part of Milan Design Week, and moved on to The Gifts & Interior trade fair in Oslo and 100% Norway in London. The exhibition featured 51 different products from 46 designers, with the intention of showcasing a diversity of approaches, innovations, skills and materials.

Norwegian Presence was made possible through a collaboration between Klubben (Norwegian Designers Union), contemporary craft proponent Norwegian Crafts, and Norwegian Icons, an organisation dedicated to raising the international awareness of Norway’s contribution to Scandinavian mid-century design. Other partners included paint manufacturer Jotun, stylists Kråkvik & D’Orazio, and graphic design studio Bielke&Yang, who were responsible for visual identity and print communication.
