Brand identity and tags for John Lewis Childrenswear Department by Charlie Smith Design, London, UK

London-based studio Charlie Smith Design worked with British department store John Lewis to develop the visual identity system and packaging for their childrenswear department. The system needed to appeal to girls and boys aged from 2 to 14 (and presumably their parents), and connect a broad range of accessories and garments that included denim, swimwear, shoes and underwear.

The result is as a contemporary and playful typographic treatment across tags that use arrangement to call out gender, colour to identify different sizes, and materiality to establish a useful communicative contrast yet visual continuity throughout.

Packaging for WallpaperSTORE* by A Practice For Everyday Life, United Kingdom

WallpaperSTORE* is the online store of UK architecture, interior, fashion, art and contemporary design magazine Wallpaper*. It features and ships worldwide a broad but tightly curated catalogue of tabletop, lighting, desktop, stationery, grooming, technology and travel objects. Many of these objects, while individually distinctive, share a sense of contrast; in form and finish, materiality and colour, but also in their contemporary crafted quality.

WallpaperSTORE* worked with London-based graphic design studio A Practice For Everyday Life on a broad range of packaging. This included gift and shipping boxes, tissue paper and box tape, gift bags and stickers, document sleeves and information cards. These needed to be suitable for holding everything from letter openers to large-scale pieces of furniture.

Drawing their inspiration from the Wallpaper* asterisk and brand colour palette, and leveraging the material language of standard packaging, the studio created a system of geometric patterns, kraft cardboard boxes and coloured sleeves that together are robust, visually appealing and add value. Although WallpaperSTORE* launched in summer of 2015 A Practice For Everyday Life documented their packaging work and recently added it to their website.

OTHR by Franklyn, United States

Branding by New York-based design studio Franklyn for innovative product design company OTHR

OTHR creates unique objects that take advantage of new production methods and materials, and brings together the world’s best designers and transformative technologies. OTHR’s objects exist at a point where art and design intersect, are simple, practical but desirable in form, and are manufactured and individually numbered to order in a way that has minimal environmental impact.

OTHR designers include British designer Sebastian Bergne, Claessen Koivisto Rune from Stockholm and New York studio Todd Bracher. These designers contribute to a diverse catalogue of objects for juicing, cutting and holding, and share the philosophy of owning fewer but better things.

With simplicity at the centre, New York-based graphic design studio Franklyn created a new brand identity and delivery system to compliment the extraordinary nature of OTHR’s products. This included logotype and logo design, and extended to illustration, packaging and posters.
