14 Islands by Bedow, Sweden

Opinion by Richard Baird

Logotype and business card by Bedow for Swedish creative development studio 14islands

14 Islands is a Swedish digital development studio that focuses on the design and build of distinctive and creative user experiences for companies such as Google, Adidas and Plume. Although its products are diverse, and include websites, apps and web-based games, these are linked by the studio’s commitment to balancing good design principles and technical performance with natural and playful interactions across all devices and screen sizes. The studio also experiments with emerging technologies, often gives talks and runs development workshops. This mix of play and technical insight is expressed by their new visual identity, designed by Stockholm-based Bedow, through colour, form, animated logo and dynamic on-screen elements, paired with the technical rigour of Monokrom’s screen-only font Aften. Visual identity runs across and connects assets such as business cards, t-shirts, tote bags, signage and website.

Logo and branded t-shirts designed by IYA Studio for arts festival Deptford X

This included a flexible logo and system of arrows and x’s that link programmes, posters, supergraphics, t-shirts and tote bags, and express the dual nature of the festival and some of the character of the area.

Loyal Coffee by Mast, United States

Opinion by Richard Baird

Illustrated coffee cups and visual identity design by Mast for barista-run and Colorado-based Loyal Coffee

Loyal Coffee is a barista-owned and operated specialty coffee shop located in Colorado Springs. It features a high ceiling, exposed beams and concrete surfaces, natural material detail such as tree trunk stools, and crafted finishes that include a mosaic floor, carved wood panel and what looks like a ghost sign. Drawing on this, the surrounding landscape, and the loyal bond that the six founders share, design studio Mast created a visual identity for Loyal Coffee. This is built around landscape references, the crafted details but geometric foundations of custom typography, and a modernity in colour and in the assembly of individual graphic elements online and in print across coffee cups, packaging, merchandise, menus.
