Sant Francesc by Mucho, Spain

Opinion by Richard Baird.

Brand identity by graphic design studio Mucho for Spanish 5-star hotel Sant Francesc.

Sant Francesc is a 5-star hotel located in the Placa Sant Francesc, beside the Church of the Templarios, within the city of Palma on the Spanish island of Mallorca. The hotel is set inside the walls of a restored historical landmark built in a neoclassical style during the 19th century and has 42 rooms and suites. Some of these rooms include wood-beamed ceilings, original frescos and moldings but also feature modern renovation, furnishings and interior design.

Drawing on the symbol of the Templarios, and taking inspiration from the colours and textures of the island, design studio Mucho developed a brand identity for the hotel that conveys something of its modern urban interior, its history and location. This comes through in type and marque, colour and pattern, and in the variety and combination of materials across brochures, stationery, business cards, menus and signage.

Brand identity, logo and stationery design by New York based Sagmeister & Walsh for contemporary restaurant Otium

Otium is a contemporary restaurant developed by American chef and restaurateur Timothy Hollingsworth. It is located in downtown LA and has a menu of rustic dishes made from sustainable ingredients grown on its mezzanine level and cooked over a wood fire. The restaurant features an open kitchen that merges indoor and outdoor spaces, created with the communal areas of its neighbours, The Broad Museum of Contemporary Art and Grand Avenue, in mind. This is also expressed in the name, rooted in Latin, which describes a place of leisurely social activity, and throughout its brand identity, which intended to bring the outdoors in. This is achieved using a mix of materials across packaging, menus, stationery, coasters and business cards, subtly expressed by a simple logo, and more explicitly as a large and detailed mural, all created by New York based graphic design studio Sagmeister & Walsh.

Brand identity and menu with gold foil detail for French inspired Mexican restaurant Madrina designed by Mast

Madrina is a Dallas based Mexican restaurant with a menu that plays with French culinary influences and Mexican tradition. The restaurant has a distinctive interior of exposed concrete beams, delicate gold light fixtures, leather upholstered chairs, beveled mirrors and tiled flooring. Like the menu, the interior is a fusion of influences, yet remains cohesive and distinctive. American graphic design studio Mast set out to create a brand identity that would align with this unique combination of cultures and would link in with interior detail. This extended across business cards, menus and signage.
