The first issue of LogoArchive in print was conceived, designed and sent to the printers (for quotation) within a day. Unfolded by Commission

Opinion by Richard Baird

Packaging design and brand communications by Commission for design and print festival Unfolded at The Gmund Paper Factory

Unfolded is a design and print festival that celebrates the creative work happening across Europe in the disciplines of design, printing and brand communication. This was held by and at The Gmund Paper Factory in Germany on the 9th November 2018. The event created a space for sharing ideas and fostering dialogue between creative individuals, providers of printing services, brand managers and experts from the business and agency scene. Unfolded also hosted lectures, keynote speakers and panels around brand strategy, materiality and sustainability. An exhibition, running in parallel to these events, showcased the latest developments within the industry.

The innovative dimension of the event, its desire to develop industry discourse, and the potential of design, material and print to synergise, is expressed in the delivery, presentation and form of the Unfolded invitation, created by London-based design studio Commission. This is initially marked by the impact of colour and type, volume and robustness, form and mechanism yet, and in contrast, is followed by the framing of a delicately micro-perforated and block foiled invitation.

Old Elephant House by Studio South

Opinion by Richard Baird

Logo, illustration and menu design by Studio South for brasserie and courtyard bar Old Elephant House at Auckland Zoo

Old Elephant House is a new brasserie and courtyard bar in the former elephant enclosure at Auckland Zoo. It offers an à la carte menu and set three-course meals made up of light and elegant dishes. It is a building that is distinct in its proportions and location, with tall doors and windows from which to hear the distant calling siamang gibbons. Taking cues from the animals of the zoo and their jungle habitats, and with a mind towards a relaxed environment for family and friends, Studio South developed an illustrative collage of exotic motifs, cropped across menus and costers, and transitioning into a space designed by Izzard by way of hand-painted murals.

Varnom Ross by Bibliothèque

Opinion by Richard Baird

New logo and graphic identity designed by Bibliothèque for London-based specialist property recruitment service Varnom Ross

Varnom Ross is a London-based specialist recruitment agency carefully pairing property professionals with private and public sector clients operating throughout the UK. Their specialism emerges from a single-minded focus on searching for and discovering the perfect synergy between individual character and collective corporate culture, professional skill set and task. This is achieved through personal conversation rather than the impersonal algorithmic governance that characterises many of today’s recruitment firms. Varnom Ross worked with Bibliothèque to express this positioning through a distinct graphic identity of contrasts, graphic immediacy and personability across print (gifts, coffee cups, ink stamps, business cards and printed communications) and screen (website and social media posts).

NOR Specialties by Re-public

Opinion by Richard Baird

Logo, branding and packaging designed by Danish studio Re-public for coffee and cocoa specialists NOR

NOR Specialities supports the development of plantation farmers and helps sustain local communities across Colombia, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Bolivia by way of its range of chocolate, cocoa nibs, roasted coffee beans and cold brew coffee products. NOR trades directly with family farms and producers of its raw ingredients, working with them to develop transparent and sustainable practices.

Danish design studio Re-public worked with NOR to launch the brand into the highly competitive Western market, delivering creative direction and visual identity. This included packaging for coffee beans, chocolate bars and cold brew coffee cans. These share a visual language of the industry by way of a communicative simplicity and immediacy, pairing this with a material language drawn from the vessels and sacks of export.
