V&A Exhibition Road Quarter by dn&co., United Kingdom

Opinion by Richard Baird

Poster campaign designed by London-based dn&co. for the opening of the V&A's Exhibition Road Quarter

Exhibition Road Quarter is a new gallery built under and an extension of The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the world’s largest museum of decorative arts and design. Although the V&A is known for its commitment to innovation its spaces within an early twentieth century Grade 1 listed building set limitations, with temporary retro-fitted interiors proving to be cramped and inflexible. Without the possibility of outward expansion, the V&A explored the subterranean, embracing innovation in architecture and engineering to create new modern spaces with greater scale and opportunity beneath. To celebrate the distinctive structure created by AL_A, and to tease and then announce the grand opening design studio dn&co. worked with the V&A to develop a campaign of posters and banners. Deptford X by IYA Studio, United Kingdom

Opinion by Richard Baird

Logo and branded t-shirts designed by IYA Studio for arts festival Deptford X

Deptford X is an arts festival that takes place over ten days across a number of public sites and spaces throughout the district of Deptford, south-east London, with the intention of engaging audiences in active and unexpected ways. This included a flexible logo and system of arrows and x’s that link programmes, posters, supergraphics, t-shirts and tote bags, and express the dual nature of the festival and some of the character of the area.

Opinion by Richard Baird

Logotype by Hey for Barcelona literature festival Kosmopolis

Kosmopolis is a five day literature festival that takes place in Barcelona every two years, but also has a programme of ongoing events in between. The festival, since 2002, has been organized by the exhibition and arts centre Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, and intends to promote literature in its many different forms. It does this through a series of talks and workshops. And by inviting professionals across a variety of fields; from poets, librarians and actors to comic-book artists, filmmakers and musicians, to discuss the key issues that concern the evolving nature of literature and present-day communications at large.

The centre recently worked with Spanish design studio Hey to create a visual identity for its 2017 event. Hey use colour to establish a continuity with previous events, but introduces a custom typeface that features characters informed by the digital, handwritten and painted word. This is complimented by a set of icons, and used to link programme guide, banners, signage and merchandise.
