Landhaus Keller by Seite Zwei, Austria

Opinion by Richard Baird.

Brand identity and gold foiled business cards by Austrian graphic design studio Seite Zwei for Graz-based restaurant Landhaus Keller.

Landhauskeller is a restaurant and bar in the Austrian city of Graz, housed within a building that is over 400 years old. It has a distinctive and highly ornamental interior reflective of the building’s history, and a quirky, current and unusual presentation style. Together these play with classical and contemporary materials, details and forms. This also runs throughout Landhauskeller’s brand identity, designed by Seite Zwei, in the use of typographical juxtaposition, choice of materials, illustrative flourish and print finish. This links business cards, coastersmenus and website.

Brand identity and business cards for Alta Quartzite mining and sales business Altaskifer designed by Neue, Norway

Alta Quartzite is a natural building material quarried from the mountains of Norway’s Alta region with a unique green/grey colour, fine texture and hard wearing non-slip properties. These make it a good choice for both interior and exterior applications, from roofing, paving and staircases, to roads and walkways. Although it is material with a long history of use it is being utilised in increasingly more innovative ways, and on an international scale.

Working on the mountainside of Peska, Norwegian company Altaskifer mines Alta Quartzite using traditional methods, and is a joint sales and marketing company for the entire slate industry in the Alta region.

Altaskifer worked with Scandinavian graphic design studio Neue to develop a brand identity that would run across a variety of touch points. These are now linked by the concept of “rough beauty” and the history of the material, from the hard manual labour and functional focus of the past, to today’s modern design and crafted contexts. This is visualised through a bright but simple colour palette, typographical contrast and the meeting of organic and geometric form across business cards, tote bags, brochure and soon to launch website.

Prospectus / undergraduate guide for The University of Sydney by graphic design studio Maud, Australia

Although The University of Sydney is recognised as the oldest university in Australia, one steeped in history, it has, more recently, suffered from a decline in its rank and the perception that it is unwilling to adapt to a changing, increasingly competitive and well-branded educational landscape. In response to this the university worked with Surry Hills based graphic design studio Maud to reposition it in a way that would better reflect its forward thinking nature and pioneering spirit. This was achieved through a diverse typographical approach to communication, bound by a limited colour palette and applied to undergraduate guides, posters, brochures and website.
