Carlsberg Black Gold by Kontrapunkt, Denmark

Opinion by Richard Baird

New minimal packaging design by Danish studio Kontrapunkt for Carlsberg's Black Gold

Carlsberg is a Danish beer brand founded in 1847 by J.C. Jacobsen. It is part of the Carlsberg Group portfolio which also includes Tuborg, Kronenbourg and Somersby cider, as well as Carlsberg Export and Carlsberg Black Gold. Carlsberg has a significant heritage. And, like many other beer brands, has largely conveyed this using the visual language and associated legacy of the beer bottle label, which then made it on to cans.

Carlsberg has begun a steady move towards a more current visual expression. This is characterised by a concise communicative intention and a stylistic minimalism. This can be seen, initially, in the packaging design of the Carlsberg can for the German market, created by Copenhagen-based studio Kontrapunkt, and in the redesign of Carlsberg Black Gold, also by Kontrapunkt. Black Gold is a dark pilsner, brewed in the same manner as Carlsberg’s premium variety, only for longer, giving it a richer flavour profile and higher alcohol content. This difference is conveyed immediately using a black and gold print finish.

Chaos by Socio Design, United Kingdom

Packaging design featuring Colorplan papers and boards by Socio Design for Luxury lifestyle accessory brand Chaos

Inspired by fashion’s current fascination with customisation, technology and a “sense of light-hearted fun”, creative duo and stylists Charlotte Stockdale and Katie Lyall created Chaos, a new UK luxury lifestyle brand producing limited edition and personalised tech and travel accessories.

Through form and finish, materiality and graphic design, Chaos products, which include phone cases and charms, zips and luggage tags, express the brand’s take on practicality and stylistic desirability, the meeting of technology and fashion, utility and individuality. These are high quality, with a price tag to match (between £76-214), and a favourite with actors Cara Delevingne and Margot Robbie.

London-based studio Socio Design were commissioned by the team at Chaos to develop a packaging design for their collection of deerskin phone cases and luggage tags, gold-plated charms and zips. Using contrasting colour and high quality production detailing, and playing with a tension between the modern and traditional, the digital world and the analogue, these reflect the brand’s playful and “anarchic” approach, and commitment to challenging contemporary luxury standards.

Summerhill Market by Blok, Canada

Opinion by Richard Baird.

Logotype, illustration and notecards designed by Canadian studio Blok for Toronto based boutique grocery store Summerhill Market

Summerhill Market is a family-run business, managed by the third generation, with premises on Toronto’s Summerhill Avenue and a smaller location—a floral boutique—on Mt. Pleasant Rd. The store has 200 employees, a butchers, bakery and deli, a BBQ in the summer and offers a variety of catering services.

Summerhill Market is admired for its high quality products, and its ability—since 1954—to consistently redefine what it means to be a boutique grocery store. Its commitment to quality is reflected in its extensive range of own-brand products, developed by an in-house executive chef and a team of 80.

With the intention of giving the store a more contemporary voice whilst maintaining its warmth, Canadian studio Blok developed a new brand identity of pastel colour, sans-serif type, moments of illustrative texture and a labelling system that links an extensive line of own brand products. As well as this, Blok also delivered assets that included business cards and stickers, packaging design, branded tote bag and notecards.
