HEWN by Föda, United States

Opinion by Richard Baird.

HEWN

HEWN is an American architectural woodworking shop, custom furniture fabrication and metalworking business with extensive facilities, a team of master-craftsmen, a national presence and local legacy. It also has a preference for native Texas and reclaimed woods.

HEWN worked with Austin based graphic design studio Föda to develop a new brand identity that would help ensure market share and longevity, and would lay the groundwork for future leadership transitions.

This began with strategy and naming, included logo and logotype design, and extended across signage, business cards, t-shirts and website, as well as van, garage door and hopper signage.

Chavez designed by Föda – Heated treated wood and print menus for Austin based Mexican restaurant Chavez designed by Föda

Chavez is a contemporary Mexican restaurant located within the Radisson hotel, Austin, Texas. The restaurant has a Southwestern menu created by chef Shawn Cirkiel and inspired by his memories of family road trips taken to the Mexican coast and the cuisine he experienced there. These memories also informed the development of a warmly lit, wood and fabric furnished interior design by Michael Hsu Office of Architecture.

Drawing on Shawn’s childhood and the mood boards of Michael Hsu, design studio Föda modernised the ephemera Shawn would have seen on the road trips of his youth, and distilled these down to six glyphs in six weights in what the studio describe as a Mezo-American fashion. These run across a variety of printed assets which included menus, coasters and business cards, as well as being worked into the interior and across tables by designer Michael Yates.

Jeffrey’s designed by FÖDA Studio

Logotype and business cards with stippled botanical illustration by FÖDA Studio for Clarksville fine dining restaurant Jeffrey's.

Jeffrey’s was a café, located in the Clarksville district of Austin that was opened in 1975 by Ron and Peggy Weiss and Jeff Weinberger. Renovated and ‘reimagined’ in 2013 by chef Larry McGuire, the venue became a fine dining restaurant, preparing a simply seasonal menu, that has gone on to be named one of 2013′s Top 10 Best New Restaurants in the country by Bon Appétit magazine.

To coincide with this renovation, design agency FÖDA Studio developed a new brand identity solution for Jeffrey’s—which included a logo-type, hand drawn illustrative detail and print with a mix of materials—based around its historic, 35 year relationship with Clarksville.
