UCL’s iconic ‘portico’ facade had been rendered so small in previous iterations of its visual identity it often got lost. Johnson Banks took and reimagined it, scaling it up and exploring how light and shadow could play across its pillars. These pillars, given a transitional effect through their different weighting, has introduced a contrasting secondary element, a dynamic forward motion applied to a resilient, static institutional architectural image. Past significance and future relevance are effectively integrated, expressed and built out into a bold visual identity.
