UCL’s iconic ‘portico’ facade had been rendered so small in a previous iteration it often got lost. Johnson Banks took this and reimagined it, scaling it up and exploring how light and shadow played across its pillars. These pillars, given a transitional effect through their different weighting, has introduced a contrasting secondary element, a dynamic forward motion applied to a resilient, static institutional architectural image. Past significance and future relevance are effectively integrated, expressed and built out into a bold new visual identity.
