One Wellington St Kilda by Studio Ongarato

Opinion by Richard Baird

Brand identity and campaign designed by Studio Ongarato for property development One Wellington St Kilda

One Wellington, a partnership between LAS Group and Qualitas, is a new property development located in the Melbourne suburb of St Kilda, not far from eclectic Fitzroy Street. The building’s architecture—designed by KPDO and comprised of 181 apartments across two buildings of 26 and 10 floors—features flowing curves inspired by its bayside location, highly-customisable interior options and unobstructed sky views. One Wellington is described as dramatic architectural expression on the skyline and an entry statement into St Kilda from the north.

Building on the highly-customisable and luxurious interior designs of KPDO, Studio Ongarato developed a visual identity and campaign directed towards a specific mindset and that draws on the multi-faceted sub-cultures of the area rather than a target market profile. This manifests itself, unusually, in a shifting tone throughout printed communications, moving from the sophisticated to the youthful, and from serious to humorous using photography, type, illustration and photography. Through this approach, Studio Ongarato’s campaign invites prospective residents to live ‘A life less ordinary’.

The One Wellington campaign identity is made up of a hardcover book, softcover booklets, posters, postcards and multi-format cards. Each unveils authentic stories from unexpected perspectives using a variety of creative techniques.

Freadman White by Studio Hi Ho

Opinion by Richard Baird

Logotype, custom typeface and business cards designed by Studio Hi Ho and Dennis Grauel for Melbourne architects Freadman White

Freadman White is a Melbourne-based architectural practice, led by Ilana Freadman and Michael White, that seeks to embed a curiosity-driven and experientially charged tension into their architectural work, reveal beauty in simple and overlooked settings, and design contextually informed structures with a disciplined whimsy. Further, rather than responding literally to physical surroundings, the practice develops spaces that are visually intriguing, emotionally resonant, sensorial and textural “informed by memories of place and the achievements of modern architecture”. These notions emerge from a mandate that intends to make positive contributions to individual lives and the wider urban project. To express the nuances and enquiries embedded in the practice and a personality that is whimsical, curious, warm, thoughtful and uncompromising Studio Hi Ho—commissioned by Freadman White to develop a new brand identity—worked with typographer Dennis Grauel to create ‘Frisky Freadman’, a custom typeface and a convivial interpretation of the classic typeface Ionic.

CareerTrackers Awards by Garbett

Brand identity for Career Trackers by Garbett

CareerTrackers is an Australian charitable organisation that addresses Indigenous disadvantage by developing professional career pathways, internship programs and links with private sector employers for Indigenous university students. It does this through a model adapted from an African-American internship program that has been tackling disadvantage for over 45 years. This model sees students intern with sponsoring companies with the intention of converting them into full-time employees following the completion of their university degree.

Sydney-based studio Garbett worked with CareerTrackers to develop a graphic identity for its 2017 Annual Report and Gala Awards evening which included banners, information cards, trophies and tote bags, and then went on to develop this for the following year. These are linked by a modern take on Indigenous art in form, colour and materiality. Where the 2017 Awards program played with multiple colours, 2018 saw the introduction of a more paired-down mix of black, white and red ink.
