Fort Point Beer Co. by Manual, United States

Opinion by Richard Baird.

Package design for Fort Point Beer Company by San Francisco based graphic design studio Manual

Fort Point is a San Francisco based small batch craft beer company that references traditional styles, yet is firmly rooted in the present, and has a philosophy that values craftsmanship and innovation, creativity and technique. Last year, working with local graphic design studio Manual, Fort Point launched a new brand identity and packaging system.

Fort Point’s forward-thinking, fast-growing and innovative nature, but also its acknowledgement of traditional processes, recipes and craft, as well as its location—not far from Fort Point National Historic Site and overlooked by the Golden Gate bridge—plays out across its packaging. Package design for Vocation Brewery's Limited Edition Christmas Stout by graphic design studio Robot Food, United Kingdom

Vocation is a UK microbrewery, established and run by John Hickling, with a range of craft beers described as having distinctive and punchy flavour profiles. Communicating the brewery’s unique personality and the crafted quality of its range rested in the hands of UK based graphic design studio Robot Food.

Drawing on the beer’s tropical, fruity, floral and hoppy characteristics, the brewery’s fearless, daring and renegade attitude, and the art of beer craft, the studio created a brand identity and label design that juxtaposes bold and robust typography alongside fine, fluid and hand drawn illustration.

To celebrate the holiday season, Robot Food and Vocation Brewery continue to collaborate, this time with a festive release in the run up to Christmas. Naughty & Nice is a single batch chocolate stout, dreamt up by the studio, created by the brewers at Vocation, and limited to 1323 bottles. It draws on the naming conventions, aesthetic qualities and design process of Vocation’s core range, and the shared challenger attitude that unites studio and brewer, but with a couple of seasonal twists.

O/O Brewing is a high-end craft brewery, set up in 2011 by Olle Andersson & Olof Andersson, with premises in the Swedish city of Gothenburg. O/O worked with Scandinavian graphic design studio Lundgren+Lindqvist, who had created labels for a variety of other O/O beers, to develop new packaging for their brews. The studio revised and simplified the design system from earlier releases but continued to embrace a collaborative approach with artists and designers. This article was updated February 2017 to include O/O Brewing’s latest releases.
