Culprit by Studio South, New Zealand

Opinion by Richard Baird.

Brand identity, drink and food menus by Studio South for Auckland bar and restaurant Culprit

Culprit is a bar and restaurant located on Auckland’s Wyndham Street. It has a menu made from ingredients supplied by local New Zealand producers, growers and farmers, and is inspired founder’s Kyle Street & Jordan MacDonald’s travels across the United States and Europe.

Culprit has a modern interior design in a converted loft space created by Kirsty Mitchell. This is characterised by large exposed beams and brick walls, solid wood tables and strip lights suspended from the ceiling and mounted, at irregular angles, on walls.

Culprit’s brand identity, created by Studio South, is described as being dark and moody. This intended to visually articulate something of the restaurant’s menu and service, which sees diners presented with trays and trolleys, and as a way to compliment Kirsty Mitchell’s interior design. This links menus, tap heads, posters, signage and website.

The Best of BP&O – December 2016

December’s highlights included Parallax Design’s work for Penley Estate, Bedow’s print work for Erik Penser Bank, and Bond’s brand identity and packaging for jewellery designer Tilly Sveaas. However, there were five projects that stood out, and have made it into BP&O’s Best Of Series.

This feature brings together some of the most unusual / distinctive projects published on BP&O each month for another opportunity to be seen and shared. These typically balance a strong concept with a compelling aesthetic and clear communicative intention that appropriately plays with form, colour, type and layout, as well as material, texture, image and print finish.

Penley Estate by Parallax Design, Australia

Opinion by Richard Baird.

New brand identity and packaging by Parallax Design for family run and award winning winery Penley Estate, Australia

Penley Estate is a family run winery established in 1989 by Kym Tolley and located in the wine growing area of Coonawarra, Australia. It produces wines that are described as having discernible regional character and are made from fruit grown in Terra Rossa soil; a red clay type created by the weathering of limestone. Penley Estate, since its inception, has produced a number of award-winning wines, and is recognised as the region’s leading producer of premium wines.

The winery worked with Parallax Design; a studio that, prior to this project, had spent time looking at the problems faced by wine producers of the Cabernet regions, to develop a new visual identity that would, not only express a change at Penley Estate, but also give Coonawarra Cabernet a more contemporary quality. This runs across new wine labels, website and livery.

The Best of BP&O — Studios of 2016

2016 has been a great year for new brand identities and packaging. There have been a wealth of studios, well-established and fledgling, producing some fantastic work. New to BP&O this year was UK studio Zak Group, Copenhagen-based Kontrapunkt and New York studio Triboro.

This post, the last of four—also check out Packaging of 2016Brand Identities of 2016 and Graphic Design of 2016—is made up of studios selected from those that had three or more features on the site over the last year. Small studios were listed alongside those with multiple offices in terms of quality and a commitment to documenting projects.

Four studios stood out for the diversity and extent of their work, and their balance of concept, clear communicative intention and compelling aesthetic. These have made it into BP&O’s Best Of Series, a feature that regular readers will probably now know brings together the most interesting, unexpected or unusual projects published on the site for another opportunity to be seen and shared.
