PLATF9RM by Studio Makgill

Opinion by Richard Baird

PLATF9RM is a co-working and office space in Brighton and Hove. It features an interior design by We Like Today that blends the utilitarian with moments of bright warm colour. Studio Makgill, working closely with PLAT9RM Founder, Seb Royle and Creative Director, Emilie Lashmar, designed a graphic identity for the space that would capture and express a spirited approach to co-working and connect with those who have a desire to escape the daily commute. The motion and energy of a collective space, and an allusion to a shorter more cheerful commute is expressed by way of bold type in motion, and through a modern convivial colour palette, this links printed materials such as business cards, posters and newsprint with the supergraphics that run throughout PLATF9RM.

Hackney Forest School by Spy

Opinion by Richard Baird

Visual identity and stickers designed by Spy for Hackney Forest School

Forest School is a scheme set-up by Hackney Council, London that seeks to connect children living within the local built-up area with the thrill of the rural outdoors. The scheme reaches out to schools and parents, offering programmes that cover all areas of the curriculum and aims to engage and develop a child’s understanding of sustainability.

London-based design studio Spy was commissioned to develop a visual identity for Forest School with the intention of increasing awareness and uptake. Following hands-on experience running activities on Hackney Marshes and having conversations with children, families and teachers the studio developed an eye-catching design direction of bold colour and shape. This is codified with a ring-bound brand guidelines document and runs across and connects club cards, posters, postcards and business cards, work packs, apparel, bags, stamps, cards and badges.

Lumik by Hey, Spain

Opinion by Richard Baird

Logotype and duplex business cards design by Hey for Spanish lighting design and manufacturing company Lumik

Lumik is a Spanish lighting design and manufacture company, and partnership between the traditional metalworking company of Francesc and Ferran Martí, and interior designer and art director Frank Domínguez. Together they have 65 years of experience, and have built a catalogue of products with simple forms, moments of colour, elements of play and the industrial. These move between those that are hidden and utilitarian and those designed to be a feature and focal point. Lumik is described as being a trendsetter with a customisable and made-on-demand approach that offers customers a multitude of possibilities. This is expressed by the company’s graphic identity, designed by Barcelona based Hey, through a variety of cheerful and modern colours, a custom typeface, and the strong material qualities of brochure and business cards.
