Jackalope Hotels by Fabio Ongarato Design, Australia

Opinion by Richard Baird

Logo, menus and stationery by Fabio Ongarato Design for Australian luxury hospitality experience Jackalope Hotels

Jackalope Hotels is a luxury hospitality experience developed by Melbourne-based Louis Li, a hotelier described as having a penchant for the avant-garde. The first Jackalope Hotel is situated in the heart of the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia. It is unique in its location, surrounded by the hotel’s vineyard, in its architecture and interior by Carr Design, and in its visual identity, created by Fabio Ongarato Design.

Interior design and visual identity are linked by the theme of alchemy – a metaphor for winemaking, a core part of the business, and expressed in the juxtaposition of visual and material elements to create a new whole. These include the hybrid qualities of the Jackalope sculpture by Emily Floyd, the mixed techniques employed by artist Kate Robertson, and the polished layers of stone and carved busts of Rolf Sachs. This also extends to the visual identity for hotel, its restaurant and bar, in the combination of paper and finish, organic image and precise typographical and geometric forms.

AIGA Design Conference by Mother Design, United States

Opinion by Richard Baird.

Programme and brand identity system by New York based Mother Design for the AIGA Design Conference

The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) is a professional design organisation with a membership that covers all forms of visual communication, from graphic design, typography and interaction to branding, animation and environmental design. As well as supporting a community of over 25,000 nationwide members, advancing design as a professional craft, strategic advantage and vital cultural force, AIGA organises two biannual events; the AIGA Design Conference and GAIN: AIGA Design and Business Conference, which are held alternating years.

In 2016, the AIGA Design Conference became an annual event. This marked, after 100 years as standard-bearer for professional ethics and practices, a moment of transition, and the implementation of a new vision; to become a hub for “broader creative constituencies”.

Taking inspiration from the evolving nature of organisation and the unexpected ways that a diversity of people and ideas come together in one place, New York-based graphic design studio Mother Design created a visual identity of unusual forms, juxtaposition and sense of change for the AIGA Design Conference. This was implemented throughout the Las Vegas conference which took place between 17 – 19 October 2016.

Trika by Bunch, United Kingdom

Opinion by Richard Baird.

Trika is an interior design company, working on both public and private spaces, with a showroom and studio in the Croatian capital of Zagreb. They represent furniture and equipment manufacturers such as Billiani, Enea and Federicia, amongst many others, whose brand names are described as being synonyms for quality, comfort and design.

Graphic design studio Bunch worked with Trika to develop a new brand identity. This included logotype, business cards, notebooks, tote bag and website. Bunch’s work frames some lovely project photography and distils down modern contemporary interior and furniture design into a simple and functional graphic expression, elevated by material detail.
