Nunchi by Bedow

Opinion by Richard Baird.

Nunchi is an Italian startup and the vision of Cedric Naudon, a self-confessed gastronome. This follows his ambitious project to create an entirely new creative neighbourhood of restaurants, fashion boutiques and design stores in Le Marais, Paris.

Nunchi intends to frame and connect all of Cedric Naudon’s gastronomic projects. The first of which is a reimagining of Edouard Nignon’s classic cookbook L’Heptameron des Gourmets, originally published in 1919 and now a rare collector’s item. This new edition brings the unique collection of recipes and stories to a contemporary audience by way of a unique collaboration with box, textile and paper makers, engravers and printers. This is accompanied by a second book, La Dive Cocagne, which gives the reader valuable insights into the creation of L’Heptameron des Gourmets.

Nunchi’s visual identity, designed by Swedish studio Bedow, establishes a graphic framework and continuity for all of the projects that will fall under the Nunchi brand. Both L’Heptameron des Gourmets and La Dive Cocagne serve as the first surfaces in which identity begins to reveal itself, the former being a rigorous exploration of design and artist craft and collaboration, a form of Gesamtkunstwerk, and the latter providing insight into this unique confluence of skills, also brought to life through short-form documentaries. Bedow were responsible for visual identity and the art direction and design of both books.

Essem Design Product Catalogue 2018 by Bedow

Opinion by Richard Baird

Design illustration and art direction by Bedow for Essem Design's 2018 product catalogue

In 2014 Bedow worked with Essem Design, a Swedish manufacturer of artisanal hallway products and furniture, to develop a new graphic identity. This included logotype, adverts, catalogue, product sheet and stationery design. The concept was based around the simple gesture “Hej—Hej då”, hello and goodbye in Swedish and a reference to the most common phrase used in the hallway.

This verbal gesture was visualised using Commercial Type’s Dala Moa, paired with Futura, and played out across a brochure and stationery set of white and unbleached papers. The result balanced a playful and personable expression with the functional and crafted. This is expanded on and further explored throughout Essem Design’s 2018 product catalogue, also designed by Bedow, in the approach to art direction, colour, form and illustration.

Näsby Slottspark by Bedow

Opinion by Richard Baird

Logo and brochure design by Bedow for Swedish property development Näsby Slottspark

Näsby Slottspark is a residential property development located in Täby, a municipality situated north of Stockholm. The development is built around a 17th-century castle and its gardens, and is made up of three distinct structural groupings, Södra Parken, Norra Parken and Strandängarna. Each of these is characterised by a Scandinavian simplicity, lightness and truth to materials inside and out and by their surroundings, a landscape of natural grasses, hedgerows and parkland. This mix of regional legacy, natural beauty and modern structure is expressed by the development’s visual identity, designed by Bedow, through logo design, type choice, illustration and photography online and in the material composition, finish and layout of brochures.
