Shakespeare In The Park 2019 by Pentagram

Opinion by Richard Baird

Posters, flyers, signage, t-shirts and newspaper advertising by Pentagram's Paula Scher for The Public Theatre's Shakespeare in the Park 2018

Shakespeare In The Park is an annual event and duo of free performances presented by New York’s The Public that takes place at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park in May and June. 2019 saw performances of Much Ado About Nothing and Coriolanus under the theme “Rumours and Rebels”.

The event was promoted through a city-wide campaign developed by Pentagram’s Paula Scher and team, with assets such as signage being designed and deployed by The Public’s in-house team. This furthers the enduring and evolving identity Paula Scher designed for the theatre in 1994, revised 2005 and again in 2008.

There remains a continuity in the impact, immediacy and dynamic qualities of previous campaigns whilst working in a new colour palette of red, blue and yellow, and an angled approach to type. This links signage, static and dynamic posters and billboards, t-shirts and newspaper advertising. The work done for the event will go on to form the basis of communications for The Public’s 2019–2020 season.

A’18 by Pentagram

Opinion by Richard Baird

Graphic identity designed by Pentagram partner Natasha Jen and team for the AIA 2018 Conference on Architecture

AIA Conference on Architecture is an annual three-day event that explores what is new and now in architecture and design. In 2018 this took place between June 21st and 23rd at Manhattan’s Javits Center, a pioneering modernist space frame structure designed by architect James Ingo Freed. The event is made up of workshops, seminars and city tours across the five boroughs of New York City as well keynotes from those working within the fields of both architecture and design who spoke of their approaches to making a difference to cities across the globe.

Pentagram partner Natasha Jen and team developed the visual identity for A’18, building on the graphic identity developed for AIA, also designed by Pentagram. This captures the vibrancy and life of the city, and the idiosyncrasies of its diverse neighbourhoods. This linked the welcome desk with takeaway assets that included tote bags, Metro Cards and city map.

Strandgut – Vasas Flora Och Fauna by Bedow

Opinion by Richard Baird

LP and CD packaging design by Bedow for Vasas Flora Och Fauna's album Strandgut

Vasas Flora Och Fauna is a Finnish indie pop-group and trio of musicians. Their new album Strandgut is made up from eleven songs taken from the band’s first two albums, which were then re-recorded in German. This was released on both LP and CD by the record label Startracks. Swedish design studio Bedow worked with Vasas Flora Och Fauna to create the packaging for Strandgut. Referring to the album’s title, jetsam in English, this features a series of figures/sculptures that have been built from maritime debris found on the beach. This is complemented by a custom typeface of drawn and ribbon-like letterforms.
