Look, as well as running BP&O I also manage LogoArchive, so I’ve seen a lot of logos, and quite a few that have depicted natural phenomena; the sun, the sea and mountains. These are enduring motifs for travel, leisure, agriculture and, of course, whatever nature-ruining corporation that wants to position itself as seemingly ‘green’.
Anyway, the point is, that they’re ubiquitous motifs in logo design, so you have to work extra hard to derive some distinction from these. Combining waves, a sun and mountains does provide ample opportunity for this, but the risk is that a symbol becomes busy, too much work and hard to remember.
RichardsDee’s logo for regenerative agriculture company Kinisla succeeds because it uses negative space between two elements to create the third. It’s abstraction at its greatest. It could have easily veered into a cold modernist version, yet, the flared terminal of the sun lend it a little more of a human calligraphic quality, an aliveness that helps give it a light optimistic tone.
