It’s insane that we now have so many new commercial space companies beyond the national and state-backed institutions. In some ways, designers have been dabbling in this ‘space’ creatively for science fiction, but now it’s IRL. We have New Orbit, Vast and Katalyst to name a few. I’d love to say that there’s some new emerging aesthetics around this, and in particular within logo design, but what we’re seeing is a doubling down on familiar motifs and a cool modernist quality. There’s stars, comets, planets and orbiting moons. Studio South’s logo for micro-gravity satellite company Outlier Space opts for the latter, a globe orbiting the counter of an ‘O’. This could have easily been a Rei Yoshimura logo, Seiko I comes to mind, but there’s just enough to lend it distinction.
