Packaging by London-based Carl Nas Associates for Tangent GC's latest range of organic soaps

Tangent GC is a Scandinavian organic garment and shoe care company developing products that intend to ensure longevity. The company’s brand identity, a simple utilitarian typographical expression, designed by Essen International, delivered a sense of information clarity through the rejection of superfluous visual language or superficial graphic detail, and divided content only by the typesetting of Akkurat Mono.

Venturing into organic personal skincare, Tangent GC worked with London-based Carl Nas Associates to build on the visual language laid down by Essen International, with a similar approach to packaging, whilst introducing a beta version of Akkurat Mono Bold and a launch campaign of dynamic image that makes a connection with the brand’s beginnings, visualising fragrance as swirling fabric.

Brand identity for Oslo-based cultural centre and co-working space Sentralen by Metric Design, Norway

The former building of Norway’s first savings bank, which began as a social initiative to serve the working class people of Oslo, now houses Sentralen, a mixed-use cultural centre. Sentralen continues in the traditions of the bank, functioning as a hub for innovators concerned with and looking to address present day societal issues.

The centre houses over 350 tenants working in cultural production, while also accommodating business needs through small meeting spaces and venues for conferences. It also intends to bring the neighbourhood to life with activities throughout the week in one of its six performing arts venues, a classic cocktail bar and restaurant with a menu of contemporary Norwegian dishes.

Scandinavian studio Metric Design was responsible for the visual identity design of Sentralen (main entity), Sentralen UNG (youth) and Sentralen Restaurant (plus bar & cafeteria), as was well as way-finding program and website which connects guests with all there is to experience at the centre. While a comprehensive project, this article focuses on visual identity and way-finding components, and was kindly written by New York-based Canadian freelance designer, writer and educator Josh Nychuk.

Brand identity and illustrated beer mats for Moi Helsinki by Bond, Finland

Moi Helsinki welcomes visitors to the Finnish city of Helsinki, and offers a place to relax after a long journey, with an extensive menu of beers and snacks from its location in the arrivals lobby at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport.

The bar features an interior design of light wood and bright neon signage, alongside dark walls, furniture and tiles. Where there are moments of utility in form and furnishing, brand identity, through lettering and illustration, offers something in the way of the personable with a strong sense of place. This extends across interior graphics, menus, branded beer glasses and coasters, all designed by local studio Bond.
